所向无前的典故

岑彭字君然，南阳棘阳（今河南新野东北）人。王莽末年，岑彭为南阳棘阳县令，因为汉兵攻破城池，他逃奔到前队大夫甄阜那儿。甄阜令岑彭戴罪立功，坚守城池。后因汉兵攻打数月，城中粮尽，岑彭不得已开城投降。汉将想杀岑彭，大司徒伯升劝解说：岑彭是一郡之长官，坚心为其主守城，那是忠节。现在他归附我们，是相信正义，应当鼓励。这样，更始帝便封岑彭为归德侯。后来，他们又归顺了刘秀。待刘秀即位（为光武帝）后，岑做了廷尉，行使大将军的职权。从建武元年至11年，岑彭多次率部队南征北战，为东汉王朝屡立战功。

光武帝建武11年，岑彭和大司马吴汉，辅佐臧宫出征蜀地。因为吴汉善用步兵、不晓水战，因而光武帝任命岑彭全权主持荆门之战。岑彭得令后，便在军中征求敢攻浮桥的人；并讲明头功有大赏，激励士兵奋战。偏将鲁奇应募而前，用火烧浮桥。风怒火盛，岑彭当即率军顺风而进，所向无前，使蜀兵淹死数千人，大获全胜。
