晋朝时期，荆州刺史殷仲堪特别节俭，对人却好行小惠。他在荆州期间遇到洪灾，他每顿只吃五个菜，连掉在桌上的饭粒都吃掉，他还经常告诫子侄们不要忘记自己曾经也贫穷过。由于他禀性直朴，深受百姓的喜爱。
