临渴掘井的典故

春秋时期，鲁昭公亲近小人，不听品格高尚之人的规劝，结果被赶出国家，逃到了齐国，这才明白自己原来的所作所为是错误的。齐景公觉得昭公已知道悔过，认为若让他回去，应该能成为一个贤良的国君。齐国大夫晏子却认为：掉在水里的人，一定要等到掉进水里以后，才会想起应该防备失足；迷路的人，迷失了方向之后，才知道应该注意路径。犹如面临灾难的人，才急着铸造兵器；吃东西塞住咽喉的人，才急着去挖井取水(这就是成语临渴掘井的意思)。虽然这时候用最快的速度，但是已经来不及了。平时对各种事情不做准备，不加提防，等到事情已就要发生时，才忙着采取措施去应付，那是行不通的。
