不敢越雷池一步的典故

东晋时，世族权贵之间不断发生战争。其中，护军将军庾亮的声势最大。他职掌中央大权，受到晋成帝的赏识。凡是朝廷大事，晋成帝都要听取他的意见。对此，镇守历阳的苏峻将军十分不满：我沙场屡建战功，庾亮凭什么青云直上！于是，他命令部下向庾亮讨伐。消息传到驻守在雷池附近的温峤都督那里。他听说庾亮受围，立刻发兵救援。不料，庾亮写信叫他切勿越过雷池一步。因为雷池一旦失守，历阳也就保不住。

这个成语原意是要温峤坐镇防地，不要越过雷池去京都。现指做事不敢超越一定的界限、范围。
