画虎类犬的典故

马援，字文渊，东汉名将，被封为“伏波将军”。

马援有两个侄子，一个叫马严，一个叫马敦。他们俩平常喜欢议论他人的是非，因此，马援对他们很是担忧，于是写了一封信给他们。

这封信的内容是：“我一生痛恨议论他人的长短，希望你们听到有人议论别人的过失，能够像听到议论自己父母那样，只可听，不可参与议论。

我希望你们向龙伯高学习，他是一个厚道、谨慎、节俭、恭谦的人，他虽然职位不高，但我很尊敬他，希望你们仿效他。

而那位杜季良是个侠肝义胆的人，能够与人同甘共苦，无论人的好坏他都能与他们交朋友，我虽然也尊敬他，但我不希望你们仿效他。

如果你们向龙伯高学习，即使学不成，还尚且能成为一个谨慎之人，就像是刻一只天鹅不成，尚可成为一只鸭子（刻鹄类鹜）；如果你们向杜季良学而学不成，就会成为一个轻浮浪荡者，这就好比画一只虎画不像，却画成一只狗了（画虎类犬）。”
