西汉名医淳于意一次犯法，官府把他押往长安，等待行剕刑和劓刑。他的女儿缇萦不忍父亲受极刑，给汉文帝上书，说：“一个犯罪的人也想改过自新……”汉文帝深受感动，就赦免了他的父亲，同时废除了宫剕、劓、耶、大辟等酷刑。
