满庭芳·落日旌旗创作背景
宋高宗绍兴五年（1135），岳飞因战功授镇宁、崇信军节度使，湖北路、荆、襄、潭州制置使，进封武昌郡开国侯，驻扎在现在的武昌。纪律严明，路不拾遗，秋毫无犯，军民胥乐，作者作《满庭芳》赠之。

这阕词在历史上受到的评价很高，可把它拿来作为岳飞驻扎在武昌的这一段生活历史来看待。
首先，这阕词在艺术上很有特色：感情丰富，色彩浓丽，悲愤不平却又出之以含蓄，较好地表达了作者在那种情况下对于岳飞的敬爱和惋惜之情。
词一开头选用了三个不同的时间，从各种角度来描写岳家军的气势。这三句，乍读时似乎是如实的写景而已，细味来才感到他无不寓有自己的感情。他是借景色的渲染，从而巧妙地传达出自己复杂的心情的。这里，他选用了落日的时分来写军容之一的旗帜，让半天的晚霞作背景，衬托着军营里飘动的万首彩旗，映着落日的余晖，宛如风翻金焰，色彩浓丽，给人一种温暖的感受。这就不仅写出了军营的壮丽，也传达出了这支军队在人民心中所拥有的那种温暖安谧的感觉。字里行间甚至表露出来作者那兴奋的脸色，也被映得金光熠熠的了。其次，他用霜晨来突出军容之一的威仪；让煞白的霜空作背景，衬托着交横如云的刀枪戟槊；惨淡的朝阳，在它们上面洒下了万点寒星，色彩森严而肃杀，给人一种凛然不可侵犯的肃穆之感，不仅写出了军营气象之森严，也表达了连作者也感到了不无畏怯的敬佩之情。最后他选用了无边的黑夜来作为整座军营的巨大的背景，黑色是什么也看不见的，作者巧妙地于静中写动，于无法显出色彩的黑里，巧妙地运用画角之声和着警夜的更铎；运用听觉从而写出既紧张而又静谧的气氛，表达了作者对于“撼山易，撼岳家军难”的无限信任之情。这一组文字虽少，却无不色彩浓丽，意与境偕，构成了艺术上的比现实更集中、更突出的和谐之美。他把数百里连营表现得这样有声有色。这些看似纯客观的声色，却都反映了作者主观的感受，达到了情景交融的诗的境界。因此，他无须再加什么感叹，表现了作者对于岳飞治军之巨大才能的钦佩了。
作者在作了如此绚丽的渲染之后，接着就用工笔来细心地勾勒他心中崇拜的英雄本人了。
在他的词中岳飞是一位风采翩翩、雍容豁达的儒将。慷慨论兵，齿颊生风，足见文采风流。简单两句，一位文韬武略而又风流俊逸的岳武穆便跃然纸上。不仅如此，通过作者慷慨风生的描述，使读者同作者一样，也如坐春风之中，仿佛听到了岳武穆那慷慨陈辞的忠诚精义，看到了他那齿颊生风的笑谑神态：他笑金兵之无能，讥投降派之可哂。于是，岳飞的精神面貌，丰满地生活在读者的感情世界之中了。
仅是慷慨论兵，尽管齿颊生风，那也不一定是岳武穆。作者接着写道：“坐拥貔貅十万，衔枚勇、云槊纵横。”这才是岳家军的典型。别看岳飞坐在大帐之中，谈笑风生，然而他的四周，有十万精兵，正纠集待命，一个个衔着枚，平端着长矛，精神高度集中，有如引满的弓，只待一声令下，便立刻飞向敌人。则岳飞的这种谈笑风生的安祥态度，本身就是一种力量的显示，一种无畏的慑服力量。
但是，威严则威严矣，而词中所透露的，毕竟不过是以无聊的谈笑来打发着祖国分裂、生灵涂炭的日子。所以作者很自然地产生了以岳飞如此雍容文雅而又武功赫赫的、不可一世的名将，如果此时放在抗金的前线，也许他就在这谈笑的顷刻之间，“匈奴授首，千里静欃枪”的遐想。这里既表达了作者对于岳飞的崇敬和对于岳家军的信赖，同时也表达出了英雄无用武之地的无限的惋惜：岳飞此时毕竟没有去平定金人，使百战百胜、金人闻之丧胆的岳飞闲在这里，空自慷慨悲歌以打发他宝贵的时光。一任半壁江山，沦于金人的铁蹄，这是无比可惜而又可痛的事。
下阕，作者追述了他来武昌时一路上的所见所闻。荆、襄是岳飞的防地。人作者突出地称道人民都能在家里安居乐业这一点，是因为这样的和平景象，在其它地方是已很难见到了。故说“荆襄，人按堵。”看似平铺直叙，然而言语之间却流露出了无限的欣羡和感慨。岳飞爱民，已是朝野尽知，有口皆碑的了。所以这在他的防地，当然更为真实可信。
作者接着用了四句来进一步描写人民安居乐业的景象。虽是四句，却按所见所闻来分写。他借提壶、布谷两种鸟的名字，不仅点明节令，而且也写出了岳家军与当地居民的水乳关系。一路上见到的是人民提着酒壶要岳家军饮一杯，以表示自己的心意。古时候，人民对于他所敬重的义师，是习惯用酒来相敬的，所谓“簟食壶浆，以迎王师。”这里着一“劝”字，非常传神，它表现了着一个因为纪律的关系不肯饮老百姓的酒，而一个因为感激情深，非要他喝一杯不可这样拉拉扯扯的动人情景。通过“布谷”的提示，原来士兵是在帮人民耕作，无怪乎这军队会得到人民热情的款待，人民要这样感激他们了。这当是作者亲眼所见的情景。最妙的是“芝夫”两句，芝是灵芝，那么芝夫就是指的药农了。荛子就是以砍柴为生的樵夫。这两种人，大都是远离城市，多数在深山老林里的。因此这当是作者在尚未进入武昌境地的山道上，碰见了从岳飞驻地出来采药砍柴的人，于是作者就向他们打听这一路听到的岳家军整肃的情况是否属实。因为这太难得了，是以未免使人难以相信。于是这些采药的、砍柴的就高兴地向作者极力地证实着，说到高兴处，不禁手舞足蹈起来，并且唱起当地的民谣以为证。这里作者没有写出自己的反映，但这“歌舞”也映出了作者的眼神，是惊喜而亢奋的。当然这样的情景在看惯了人民解放军的人们，那是不足为奇的，要知道在封建时代，那就是了不起的政绩。作者在最后感慨地说：要是能让岳飞去驱营布阵，他是可以就这样轻裘缓带从容不迫地一直打到黄龙府都无人能敌的。然而残酷的现实却是岳飞被疑，置而不用。于是作者恨恨地说：像岳飞这样为国建立了不朽功勋的人，是应该把他的风采画入专门纪念功臣的麒麟阁内的。作者的这阕“句句缘实”之词，最后的结尾，却是不实的。岳飞当年不仅没有入麒麟阁，反而以“莫须有”的罪名屈死在了风波亭。这虽是后话，但就岳飞此时的境况看，敏感的作者已察觉到了这种不平，所以才有这虚拟的一笔。这是作者深刻的地方。“功谁纪？”作者在这里直是在质问了。虽然这时岳飞尚身居侯位，但作者从祖国正需要岳飞上前线时，而高宗却让他在这里坐冷板凳的现实中，已经感觉到岳飞的不妙了。而事实上，韩世忠在镇江，岳飞在武昌，都是为了“罢其兵权”，以便和议得以顺利进行。当时高宗为此特地下了一道诏书说：“李、郭在唐俱称名将，有大功于王室；然光弼负不释位之衅，陷于嫌隙；而子仪闻命就道，以勋名福禄自终。是则功臣去就趋舍之际，是非利害之端，岂不较然著明！”这真是说得再清楚也没有了。正是由于高宗的这种卑怯心理，才使得南宋永远处于偏安之中。“风神宛转，麟阁画丹青”，表面看来是歌颂朝廷的，实则含有害怕岳飞去立功的悲愤。荆襄有幸，却是整个祖国的不幸。岳飞是如此的有为，却不能为统一祖国而留影于麒麟阁。爱与惜交织在一起，歌颂与悲愤混同，这就使得这阕词有缠绵悱恻，无限低徊的艺术魅力。

南宋诗人、词人。字公序，上元（今江苏南京）人。与邵亢同族（《金陵诗徵》卷五）。徽宗宣和初随父宦寓宣州，四年（一一二二）返乡，李弥逊有文送行（《筠溪集》卷二二《送邵公缉还乡序》）。高宗绍兴中在鄂州，曾献词岳飞，献书朝廷。有《荆溪集》八卷（《宋史·艺文志》），已佚。事见《金佗续编》卷二八。
